THREE HOURS LATER, Kate hadnât learned much more. Online searches for information about Antonio Lusk had yielded plenty about his real estate development ventures. Lusk was very good at it, with a number of sizable government-related contracts throughout the UK either pending or already going to construction. Heâd had a major role in some overseas developments as well, including ventures in Thailand and India. Detail on those were thin, though, and it made Kate curious, as did the general lack of information about his personal life. Lusk was good-looking, had money, yet he was not known for dating or relationships. Most of the tabloid fodder consisted of him being seen at events... ground-breaking ceremonies, season openers for the Opera or the Philharmonic, and an appearance at a heritage festival in Edinburgh.
Kate trudged to the kitchen for a cold water. Sheâd had way too much coffee as she searched and was feeling jittery. She also hadnât had a cigarette for quite some time and decided to venture up to the roof garden for one. Water in-hand, she climbed the spiral staircase to her small, loft-like bedroom and went out the French doors to the roof garden. Sheâd been trying to pull it together a bit, channeling some of her moments of almost frenzied energy into gutting the beds and preparing them for new growth. She wasnât sure what she wanted to put into them yet, but Kate knew they needed to be two things: low maintenance and hard to kill. Sheâd mostly settled on bulbs of some kind, because they were easy enough to plant and easy to move if she wanted, too. Or course, that meant waiting a bit longer to plant, but it also meant sheâd have to do very little to take care of them, save some weeding and watering occasionally next Spring. She was notoriously bad at tending plants, a characteristic that had caused her mother no-end of grief. How is it possible you cannot remember to water them? You remember everything else! Kate chuckled at the recollection of her motherâs words, then lit her cigarette. Considering Kateâs âphotographic memoryâ, and the fact that her mom was a botanist, it really didnât make much sense.
Kateâs mind drifted as she enjoyed the feeling of the nicotine. It calmed her nerves a bit, especially times like this when the hunt for information and knowledge had made her a bit on-edge. Running into Lusk hadnât helped, either. He was seductive, and more than a little frightening at best, and encounters with him, no matter how benign, always put her anxiety into high-mode. It wasnât an unfounded feeling... Kate knew he could not be trusted in any respect, successful businessman or not. After all, he was buddy-buddy with HER.
Mary Stoner... Brilliant, beautiful... deadly. Kate had her first tango with the seductress the past winter during the Tower torso murder investigation, and the encounter had not left a good taste in eitherâs mouths. And Lusk had been there, sitting pretty at the table with the dark lady herself.
